Research question:

Do shelter-in-place policies (=lockdowns) work to reduce the health burden of Covid-19 or do they create more harm to human life?

Objective: The objective of this assignment is to write a The Conversation style article on the topic given. The Conversation articles are usually 600-800 words long but in this assessment you write up to 3,000 words including references and captions (figures and tables). The main feature of such articles is that they are accessible summaries of existing scientific work or scientific insights that

This assignment gives you two options. Each assignment aims to practice specific research skills. But beware: each requires a specific pre-project skill-set:

Project Alternative #1: Statistical analysis of data that you collect yourself

Objectives:

(1) Learn how to search for data online

(2)  Learn how to download the data and analyse it

(3) Learn how to present results in tables or figures, and present them in a digestible format to lay audiences

What would you have to do? Search for data on lockdowns online by country or by states within a country. Here is one example of how you could do it:

-    Visit this Wikipeadia website: LINK. This page provides for each country the exact start and end date of lockdowns. Insert these into a spreadsheet (e.g. excel).

-    Try  to  find  data  on  per  capita  (1)  covid  infections,  (2)  covid  deaths,  (3)  GDP,  (4) unemployment, (5) overall mortality, and if possible (6) excess mortality for each quarter of a year (or monthly if available) between 2015 and 2021. -     Either analyse the data in Excel, or Stata, which is available for university students. If you

have difficulty importing data into STATA, please let me know!

Produce the following statistics:

1.   Figure  1a: a histogram of “length of lockdowns” averaged over all countries. Present histograms Figure 1b, and 1c separately for countries that locked down early (before many deaths occurred) and countries that locked down later (after many deaths occurred).

2.   Table 1: A ranking of countries with the longest cumulative lockdown and produce the mean and standard deviation. Produce a Table 1 with the top 10 and bottom 10 countries. Explain whether there are differences in the definition of lockdowns across countries.

3.   Table 2: Estimate a regression model in which you regress outcomes (e.g. Covid deaths in total, GDP, Mortality, or whatever you can find data on) measured in 2021 on the length of lockdown, and controls (e.g. quarter/month of the year, region, lagged outcome (e.g. GDP in 2019)). Test whether outcomes were better for countries which locked down hard and early, if this information is available. Provide a Table 2 in which you present the results.

I will provide you with:

(1) A Stata do file which helps you to program your necessary statistics, tables and figures

(2) Advice on how generate tables and figures

Write a final report of no more than 3000 words (including references and captions) in a style ready for The Conversation. You do not need to review the literature other than referring generally to a debate about the costs and benefits of lockdowns.

Project alternative #2: Systematic review of the existing literature

Objectives:

(1) Learn how to conduct a systematic review

(2)  Learn to condense the main insights of an international literature

(3) Learn how to write about such insights in a systematic and accessible way

I would not expect you to include more than 25 papers in your literature review. I leave it up to you how you want to analyse the papers you read, but I usually approach literature reviews as follows:

1.   Search keywords on google, google scholar, NBER Covid (LINK), and journals such as theLancet,PNAS,Science, orNature.

2.   The keywords will be critical: I would use: effects of lockdowns, shelter-in-place policies, cost benefit analysis of lockdowns…

3.   Select  as  many  articles  that  you  can  find  and  enter  them  in  a  reference  list.  Do  it systematically (e.g. in Word document you can use the Reference tab)
