You will first get feedback on your draft slides, and then give a presentation in week 11, 12, or 13. You will also be assessed on your critique of someone else’s presentation. |
Assignment Outline
Students are required give an academic presentation, directly based on their academic essay (Essay 1). These 8-minute presentations will be given in the last 3 weeks of the semester. Presentations will be given using presentation slides.
The slides can be created in whatever package you prefer – Powerpoint, Scientific Workplace/Beamer, Lyx/Beamer, etc. You can submit your slides as ppt, pptx, or pdf.
How many slides should you have? This is really up to how you structure your presentation. “2 minutes per slide” is a good rule of thumb, but feel free to break this rule. For example, you may wish to use a couple of slides that make a quick point, for example a graph or figure, and only take 30 seconds for those. Or you may take 3-4 minutes on a slide with a number of touchpoints that you play off with illustrations, etc. Bottom line: make sure you practice your presentation multiple times so you know you can get through it at a good, engaging pace in just about (but under) 8 minutes.
The presentation will be prepared in two steps. First, students will submit a draft of their presentation slides, through the assignment link on Canvas. The slides will be reviewed by a tutor and go through a peer review session in class when you will present your slides to multiple classmates, using Zoom breakout rooms. In light of this feedback students should revise their slides in preparation for a meeting with the tutor. For students assigned to present in week 11, they will be able to meet with the tutor early in the week so there is time to revise the slides before the presentation.
Second, students will give their presentation in lecture, in week 11, 12, or 13. Please be sure to familiarize yourself with how to “share screens” in Zoom if you are in an RE group. After the presentation, one of the other presenters in the same session, will be asked to provide a very short critique of the presentation (about 1 minute) only on the quality of the presentation (clarity of communication, eye contact, pace, structure, quality of the slides, clarity of main argument and evidence, etc), not the content. This is part of the peer feedback component of the course and will be assessed by the marker.
Each critique will then be followed by a short Q&A with the audience. Class members will be expected to ask questions or provide comments in response to the presentation, which will be moderated by the presenter. Other class members may be randomly selected to provide a comment on the presentation, if necessary.
Academic Honesty and Plagiarism
Presentation 2 is explicitly interlinked with Essay 1, because the assignment is to present content from Essay 1. Hence it is not self-plagiarism or “recycling” to re-use any content from Essay 1, in Presentation 2. You do not need to cite Essay 1, in Presentation 2. However, things you cited in Essay 1 should be re-cited in Presentation 2, and any new outside content should be cited according to the usual citation protocol.
Due Date
The assessment will be completed in steps:
1. First draft of slides are due for submission in Canvas (in PDF format) by 6 pm on Thursday 6 October.
2. There will be a peer review session in lecture on Thursday 6 October. Please be prepared to share a copy of your slides with your partner, and to use the “share screens” function in Zoom to give a full practice presentation ifyou are in an RE group.
3. In light of tutor feedback on Canvas, and peer review feedback, students will revise their draft slides for a group meeting with their tutor in the week of 17 October. These 5- student, 30-minute tutorial meetings will be coordinated through the calendar function on Canvas.
4. In light of all the feedback students will give their final presentation in one of the last three weeks of class (20 October, 27 October, or 3 November). They will be responsible to submit a final version of their slides on Canvas one hour before the session on the day they present. Students in RE groups will be responsible to present from a device that can “share screens” to display their slides on Zoom while they present, while they will be responsible to make sure their slides are loaded on the room computer if they are in a CC group. Subject to scheduling constraints, presentation slots will otherwise be randomly assigned. In the same session, students will also give a marked critique of one of the other presentations.
Grading Weight
26% of the course grade, with four aspects:
1. First draft of slides marked online (4 points) and participation in peer review session (2 points).
2. Revision of slides and participation in group session (4 points).
3. Presentation ( 12 points). The grading sheet for this part of the assessment is attached.
4. Short critique of another student’s presentation (4 points). 50% of mark will come from clarity and arrangement of critique, 50% of grade will come from content of critique, especially application of contents and principles we have learned throughout ECON5004.
