Write a 1, 500 + 200 word essay on one of the following topics.

(1) Discovery of hyperbolic geometry: Gauss, Bolyai and Lobachevsky.

(2)  Gauss and his contribution to geometry.

(3) Riemann and his contribution to geometry.

(4) Historical development of classical Differential Geometry. You may concentrate on a par- ticular topic or give a broader overview.

(5)  Spherical trigonometry. Geodesics, triangles, areas, angles. Rule of sines/cosines, etc.

(6) Hyperbolic trigonometry.  Some or all of the following: geodesics, triangles, areas, angles, rule of sines/cosines, etc; models of hyperbolic plane and connection between them.

(7) Different models of Hyperbolic Geometry and connection between them.

(8) Four-vertex Theorem. Give a complete, detailed and accessible proof.

(9) Hilbert’s Theorem.  A pseudosphere has constant curvature  _1, but is not  “complete” . Give a complete, detailed and accessible proof of the fact that the hyperbolic plane has no C2  realisation in R3 .

(10) Minimal surfaces in nature, science and architecture.

(11)  Conformal maps in geometry and cartography.

This essay is worth 10% of the subject assessment. Your mark will be a function of:

(a)  Mathematical content.  This is an essay in mathematics.  As such, it must contain a rea-

sonable amount of mathematics. You can include some theorems, with proofs, illustrative examples, etc.   At the same time, your essay should be written at a level of technical difficulty understandable by a mathematically literate student, so please do not include material that you (or I) do not understand.

(b)  Literature.   Quality of literature, proper citations.   There is to be no verbatim quoting

without acknowledgement and referencing.  All referencing must include author, title and date/year and, for journal articles, reference to the journal title, volume and pages.  In addition, for web-based materials the URL must be given. All submissions will be checked by Turnitin for proper referencing and originality.

(c)  Presentation, structure and composition. Clarity of style, quality of plots and diagrams.
