Overview

This project aims to give students a chance to work on industry projects based on the current Data Science space at the graduate level. This year, there are two open-source projects available to choose from:

1.  Generic Real Estate and Property Consulting:

Predicting rental prices in Victoria as part of a generic Real Estate Consulting Firm. This will be a project focusing on web scraping, regex, geospatial analysis, heuristics, APIs, and clustering.

2.  Generic Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) Firm:

Finding the Top Y Merchants to onboard out of a list of X Merchants where Y < X for a new and generic BNPL firm.  This will be a project with larger datasets focusing on insights, heuristics, predictions, and fraud detection.

The  specs  for  each  project  have  been  released  on  Canvas which  should give you  a  rough estimated on effort (i.e number of hours, types of tasks, etc).

One member of each group will need to put in their group preferences by the End of Week 5 (26/08/2022) at 1700 AEST found under the “Project 2 (Industry Project)” module.  Your first preference is not guaranteed, though we will try and accommodate first preferences where possible.

Assessment Overview

The Industry Project will be worth a total of 50% of your final grade, consisting of the following assessment pieces.

Attendance, Checkpoints, and Meeting Minutes - 10%

● Attendance and Checkpoints will be marked off by your tutor every week.  Note that it is expected all groups turn up to at least one tutorial per week.

● Meeting minutes should be uploaded every Friday by 1700 AEST from Weeks 6 and 11 (including the Mid Semester break) under the  “Attendance, Checkpoints, and Meeting Minutes” submission link. This will be checked off weekly by the teaching team.

* The marks are automated for this, so any late submission will result in a 0 for that week.

* It is your groups’ responsibility to upload this.

* We recommend groups upload meeting minutes at the end of the tutorial to mitigate this.

● After your first submission, you can overwrite the submission the following week as we can see all submissions to check the timeline.

Presentation - 30%

● Presentation submissions must be made via Turnitin on Canvas in PDF format at the beginning of Week 11, even if your allocated presentation is in Week 12.

● This is to ensure students who have earlier presentations are not disadvantaged.

●  You will get more details on the Presentation closer to the date.

Deliverable Assessment - 10%

● The Deliverable Assessment will be dependent on your project but will most likely be a GitHub repository containing your code, findings, analysis, etc.

● This will be due at the end of Week 11 (note that it will overlap with presentations).

●  You will get your deliverable assessment task once your group has been locked in and the datasets have been released.

●  Whilst we con the term  “deliverable” here, this is not for any official company so there is actually no real  “deliverable” to a client here.

At the  end  of the  Industry  Project,  there  will  also  be  a  Team  Review  &  Self Reflection component worth 10% of your final grade.
