Assessment Requirements, Instructions & Marking Guide
Part 1 (24 marks)
In this assessment, you will be required to apply your course knowledge to analyse the business case Dakota Office Products (DOP). This assessment has two parts. You will be required to respond to a set of questions via a Blackboard test for each part.
Part 1 Requirements
• You are required to submit your assignment via a Blackboard test.
- A mock (practice) test that is identical to the actual test is now available for you to practice assessment submission. Multiple attempts are allowed for the mock test. Please note that your submission to the mock test will not be graded and cannot be used in place of the formal submission – you must submit your response for grading via the Blackboard test “ACCT7107 Case Assignment Part 1 Test (Submission of Responses) S2 2022” .
- The Blackboard tests (both the actual and the mock tests) contain identical assignment questions as those presented in the document “ACCT7107 Case Assignment Questions_Part 1” .
- You have one (1) attempt at submitting your Case Assignment Part 1 via the Blackboard test “ACCT7107 Case Assignment Part 1 Test (Submission of Responses) S2 2022” . Once you click start the test, you have an hour to complete it. The test will auto-submit your responses after 60 minutes if you do not submit your work before then.
- You are expected to prepare your complete assignment responses in a word document in advance. You will then enter all your responses into the Blackboard tests for submission before the deadline in a single attempt – make sure you are fully ready to make a submission before you click open the test.
- You are required to complete this test for submission by 4pm, 26th August 2022. The test will remain accessible after the deadline for students who have not previously accessed it. However, any submission made after this time without a valid extension will attract penalty as per section 5, the ECP.
- This assignment assesses your understanding of the course content. You do not need to perform independent research or reference external sources of information for this assessment.
Part 1 Instructions on Answering Questions & Marking Guide
• Answering questions:
- Q1-3 are multiple choice questions that concern the background information of the case. These questions assess your familiarity with the case and only require you to recall information .
Marking Q1-3: for each question, 1 mark for the correct answer, 0 mark otherwise.
- Q4-5 are short-answer questions. Your answers should only consist of a few words. You will need to demonstrate the capacity of applying cost accounting concepts that you have learned in the context of manufacturing businesses to an entity that may or may not be a manufacturer.
Marking:
Q4: 2 marks for stating the correct answer, 0 mark for stating anything else.
Q5: 3 marks for stating the correct cost(s). Negative marking applies: deduction of 1 mark for every incorrect cost item stated. Lowest possible score for the question: 0 mark .
- Q6 is a long-answer question that requires an involved response . You will need to critically evaluate the impact on the business from the business’ newly added service and process. You are required to state the business’ strategy upfront and follow up on this by explaining how you are able to determine the business’ strategy given the case information and with reference to your course knowledge.
Marking Q6: 1 mark for stating the correct strategy, 7 marks for sound reasoning and the appropriate use of case information .
- Q7 is a short answer question. You are to identify the problem that the business is facing.
What is a problem? A problem is what an organisation must overcome to survive or prosper, it is a clearly problematic situation that the management is aware of and would like to investigate, address and resolve .
Example of a problem: Company XYZ has reported consecutive periods of losses . Hint: there is a single problem in the DOP case.
- Q8-13 are a series of True/False questions that prompt you to identify the issues in the case.
What is an issue? Issues are the causal factors to the problem. Issues often do not appear to be problematic at face value - they require investigation and analysis to be better understood.
Example of an issue: Implementing a process costing system in a company that produces unique customised products → a costing system is either a good system or a bad system by itself, i.e., it is not an issue by itself, however, a process costing system becomes an issue when it is implemented in a job costing environment.
