Task description

Part B of the Bioprocess assignment requires you to research a topic and answer a few questions. Your answer should draw on the relevant literature. Pick one of the following topics

•   Cultivation of mammalian cells in bioreactors for human consumption

•   Bioreactor cultivation of cyanobacteria for the manufacture of valuable products

•   Production of therapeutic bacteriophage in bioreactors

•   Production of plasmid DNA for applications such as gene therapy and in vitro translation (IVT) to manufacture therapeutic RNA

You will be required to review the production process and identify at least one challenge to improving the productivity of the process and/or product. Based on your review, you will be asked to propose strategies to address the challenge and improve the bioprocess. Remember to back up your argument with relevant academic references.

Recommended structure for the essay (1000 to 1200 words)

Introduction (200 - 250 words)

In this section, you should describe the bioproduct, describe briefly what the product is used for, estimate and predict the future trend of the product and/or its production.

Description of the bioprocesses (200 – 250 words)

In this section, you should describe the process of production and the kinetics of product formation. It may be easier to focus on one particular product where you have found relevant literature in answering this question.

Review of the bioprocesses (200 – 250 words)

In this section, you should evaluate the process and identify at least one challenge to the improvement of the productivity of the process and/or product.

Strategies for improvement (300 - 350 words)

In this section, you should identify suitable strategies to address the challenge you have highlighted and explain ways in which adopting the strategies can improve the productivity of the process and/or product
