Problem 1:  (The Game Show)

Mary has decided to participate in a general knowledge game show.  She will be asked a number of questions. Each correct answer will award her a sum of money. If she answers a question incorrectly, she will lose all of her accumulated money and be asked to leave the show. She can choose to leave the game with her accumulated earnings prior to any question. Her chances and possible prizes are given in the table below:

What is her optimal policy? On average how much is she expected to win (EMV)?

Problem 2:  (Flying to Paris)

Joe has decided to spend the summer in Paris. If he purchases the tickets today (November 30), the airfare is:

❼ One way ticket - ✩350.

❼ Return ticket - ✩660.

If he purchases the tickets tomorrow, the airfare will be:

❼ One way ticket - ✩370.

❼ Return ticket - ✩730.

This evening, he will be attending a party and might win a one way ticket in a raffle (prob. = 0.3).  In the case that he has already purchased a return ticket, he will be refunded ✩280 (if he has not purchased a ticket, he will only have to purchase a one way ticket). What should Joe do?
