Tuesday & Thursday, 9:30-10:50 a.m., PSLH 100

Discussion Sections

The TA will hold 3 optional discussion sections each week from Week 2 through Week 10.

The schedule will be available on Canvas. Feel free to attend whichever discussion section best fits your schedule on any particular week.  You do NOT need to officially “enroll” in a discussion section on WebReg (although it is OK if you do).

Course Materials

Interactive Psychology: People in Perspective, Second Edition by Gross, Schmader, Hard, Anderson, Phelps, Berkman, & Gazzniga. Publisher: Norton, 2023, ISBN: 9780393445114. This custom ebook will be used for all three quarters of the Psychology Fundamentals A, B, and C course series.  It can be found here: https://digital.wwnorton.com/interpsych2psychsci7irvine

Purchasing the book gives you access to optional tools called InQuizitive and ZAPS. These tools are not required in this section of Psychology Fundamentals C but you can use them as study aids if you wish.

This book is meant to be used digitally. Once you’ve purchased it, you will have the option to upgrade to a loose leaf copy.

Course Overview

Psy Beh P11, A, B, C and Psych 9 A, B, C refer to the same, cross-listed, three-quarter course sequence. All three courses are offered every quarter and they do not have to be taken in a specific order. Together, this sequence provides a comprehensive introduction to psychology and serves as the required foundation three-course series for students majoring in Psychological Science in Social Ecology and for students majoring in Psychology in the School of Social Sciences.

P11C focuses on several specific areas of psychology: health psychology; social psychology; personality and individual differences; and abnormal and clinical psychology.

Evaluation

● You will have the opportunity to earn up to 200 points in this course.

● Midterm Exams 3 exams at 40 points each = 120 points (60% of your grade)

● Final Exam 1 exam at 50 points (25% of your grade)

● Reflections 5 reflections at 2 points each = 10 points (5% of your grade)

● Lecture Participation (Poll Everywhere) 20 points (10% of your grade)

Reflections

Approximately every two weeks, you will be asked to write a brief reflection paper (1 page long).  They are opportunities for you to think critically about the material you’ve been learning in class and apply that material to the real world or to a common myth or hot topic in psychology.  These are not research papers, but you will be asked to reference the text book or other materials to support your views.

Lecture Participation

We will be tracking your attendance/participation in class with the use of Poll Everywhere.  There are two things you need to do to make sure you will be able to participate successfully.  First, make sure your default email address in Canvas matches your email address as it is listed in the campus directory (https://directory.uci.edu/). This is required in order for Poll Everywhere to correctly report any grades or participation scores in the Canvas gradebook. Instructions for finding and updating your default email in Canvas are available here: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Student-Guide/How-do-I-change-my-default-email-address-in-my-user-account-as-a/ta-p/410
Secondly, take a moment to sign in to Poll Everywhere with your UCInetID:
Open pollev.com
Select Login on the left side of the page
Enter your @uci.edu email address as it is listed in the campus directory (https://directory.uci.edu/) and select Next
Login with your UCInetID and password
Complete your account setup by adding your name

For more information about completing Poll Everywhere activities, see https://support.polleverywhere.com/hc/en-us/articles/1260801556349-Responding-to-questions
If you run into any technical difficulty or have any questions about your UCI Poll Everywhere account, please contact our campus support staff by emailing [email protected] or call the Classroom Technologies help line at (949) 824-8833

At the end of the course, we will count up the number of questions you answered and divide that by the number of questions asked (e.g., 133 questions asked/150 questions answered=88.7%). If you respond less than 25% of the time, you will receive 0 participation points. If you respond between 25-50% of the time, you will receive 5 participation points. If you respond between 51-64% of the time, you will receive 10 participation points. If you respond between 65-74% of the time, you will receive 15 participation points. If you respond at least 75% of the time, you will receive all 20 possible points.

You will NOT receive points for questions you did not answer, even if you forgot your mobile device / laptop, the wifi malfunctioned, etc.

Exams

Missing Exams.

Here’s what you need to know about missing exams:

1)  Acceptable reasons for missing an exam include illness, family emergencies, religious observances, university-sponsored conflicts, and evacuation due to natural disaster (e.g., fire, earthquake).  Vacation plans, employment obligations, being confused about the exam days/times, and simply forgetting to take the exam are not acceptable reasons for missing a quiz or exam.

2)  If you know in advance that you will need to miss a quiz or exam for an acceptable reason, you must let me know as soon as you become aware of the conflict.

3)  If you miss (or know that you will need to miss) a midterm for an acceptable reason and you have documentation of this reason (e.g. doctor's note), you must contact me immediately (within 24 hours).  Make-up exams will not be given.  Instead, students who miss a midterm for an acceptable reason, have documentation, and contact me immediately will receive a score that is equivalent to the average score of the midterms that they do actually take.

4)  If you miss (or know that you will need to miss) the final and you have a documented reason (e.g., doctor’s note), you must contact me immediately (within 24 hours).  Make-ups for the final exam will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

5)  If you do not have documentation and an acceptable reason – and/or if you do not contact us immediately (within 24 hours) - you will receive zero points for the quiz or exam that you missed.  You definitely do not want to receive a zero, so you should take every step to keep this from happening!

Extra Credit

Opportunity #1:  Research Activities.

Option 1A.  You may earn extra credit by participating in experimental research through the Social Ecology Human Subjects Lab.  Participation in research is completely voluntary; there may be alternative ways to accrue extra credit for this course. It is your responsibility to read through the policies on the HS Lab Student Participation Page and note the deadlines listed on the SONA login page.  To participate in research, login to SONA and view the list of available studies.  Studies are listed randomly and change throughout the quarter as they become available. If you agree to participate in an experiment, you form a contract with the researcher to be present at the assigned time and designated place.  If you accrue 2 unexcused no-shows your account will be limited and you will not be able to sign up for additional studies for the remainder of the quarter. You will earn 1 SONA credit for each hour of research participation.  For example, 1 hour of research participation = 1 SONA credit.   You may assign a total of 4 SONA credits to this course.  You must allocate each credit earned to the course(s) of your choice.  This course is listed in SONA as Psych Fundamentals C (P11C / P9C).  It is your responsibility to check your credit assignments before the stated deadlines on the SONA login page, as accounts will be disabled and no changes, extensions, or exceptions will be made.  No credit will be given if a student does not properly allocate his or her credit.  For questions about the HS Lab or SONA please contact [email protected].

SONA Login Page

Option 1B.  You may elect to read current articles that are relevant to the health psychology lectures or textbook.  These articles may come from newspapers, magazines, psychology journals, or book chapters (other than your textbook); articles from websites are OK only if they are associated with legitimate news sources (e.g., NY Times, LA Times, etc.).  For each article, you should write a brief summary (at least one FULL page, double-spaced, typed with 1” margins, nothing larger than 12-point type) and indicate how it relates to the content of the class.  You need also to attach a copy of each article with your summary. You may complete up to 4 summaries, for up to 4 extra credit points (1 point per summary).

Opportunity #2:  Course evaluations.  Toward the end of the quarter, you will receive an email inviting you to fill out an online evaluation of me/this course (as well as a separate evaluation of the TAs/discussion section).  Your answers to this evaluation will be anonymous and we will not be able to read the evaluations until after the quarter is over, but we will receive a list of students who filled it out.  If you fill out the evaluation of me/this course and at least one TA evaluation by the deadline, you will be given one extra credit point.

Opportunity #3: Discussion Sections. The TAs will hold optional weekly discussion sections, which you are encouraged to attend.  The activities for discussion sections will vary...sometimes, the TAs will review for and/or go over exams.  Other times, they may do activities related to something we are learning (to help you gain a deeper understanding of the material) and/or they may lecture on sections of the book that I will not be covering in lecture (but that you are still responsible for).  Most importantly, the discussion sections are an opportunity for you to ask questions and get extra help.  Your attendance/participation in discussion section will be recorded by the TAs each week – and there will be two chances to earn Extra Credit for discussion section attendance/participation.  Specifically, at the end of Week 5, we will randomly select one week’s attendance (either attendance from Week 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5) to count as 1 EC point, and then again at the end of Week 10, we will randomly select one week's attendance (either attendance from Week 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10).  If you attend any discussion session in a week that is chosen, you will earn 1 EC point for your attendance on that week – but please note: to earn the EC point, you must arrive on time and stay for the entire session, and if you attend more than one discussion section in a chosen week, you will still only earn 1 EC point for that week.  You can earn up to 2 extra credit points for discussion session (one point for Weeks 1-5 and one point for Weeks 6-10).

Combining extra credit options.  You can (and should) combine these options. You can only earn a MAX TOTAL of 6 extra points (3% of your total grade).

Please submit all of your extra credit assignments by 5:00 p.m. on Friday of Week 10.

Grade Disagreements

Occasionally, a student may believe that they deserve a higher grade on an assignment than they actually received or may believe that there is more than one right answer to a multiple-choice question (and that the item they chose, while marked wrong, should actually be correct).  If you believe that you deserve more points than you have earned on a particular assignment or quiz, you must state your argument in writing and email it to me; please include your full name and your email address on this document.  You should be thorough in your argument, referring to page numbers in your text or outside references where appropriate.  You must turn in these arguments within ONE WEEK of receiving the grade/score in question.  After one week, you grade/score is permanent.

Learning The Lecture Material

I will my lecture slides on Canvas each week (and recordings of lectures during periods of remote instruction).  These slides provide only a basic overview of what I am talking about in class and, therefore, should NOT be thought of as a SUBSTITUTE for watching lecture videos / attending lecture or reading the textbook and assigned articles.

Scores for all assignments will be posted on the online gradebook. At the end of the quarter, if you have a fraction of a point on your total score, I will round to the nearest integer.  This means if you have a .4 or lower, I will round down, and if you have a .5 or higher, I will round up.
