Course Description

This course introduces the basic and relevant statistical concepts and techniques to students. Thereby, it enables students to apply these concepts and techniques to practical problems across different business functional areas. The emphasis is on practical applications and real-world problem-solving. Areas covered include descriptive statistics, probability, inferential statistics, regression and correlation, and the use of a statistical software package.

Course Objectives

The objectives ofthis course are to give students an understanding of the role of statistics in business and commerce. It will become clear how pervasive statistics has become and how essential the basic concepts are to modern business practice. Students will learn the basics of data analysis and the fundamental notion of statistical inference. The statistical concepts developed in this course will provide the knowledge necessary for students to apply the basic techniques in a wide variety of circumstances and, perhaps more importantly, will enable students to assess the legitimacy and significance of many and varied reports that students will come across during their careers.   Students are taught to use statistical software to perform analysis and to interpret the results.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, students will be able to:

1.   recognise the role of statistics in business and commerce,

2.   discuss the basic concepts are to modern business practice,

3.   apply the basic techniques in a wide variety of circumstances in business applications,

4.   assess the legitimacy and significance of statistical reports.

Measurement of Learning Outcomes

1.   Questions that require conceptual understanding, database analysis, and case study are covered in the assignments.

2.   Questions require conceptual understanding, and applications are assessed in both the mid-term test and the examination.

Teaching Approach

The instructor of the course decides on the teaching methods used in individual sections. Basic concepts and theories related to real-world problems will be discussed in classes. Laboratory sessions will be used to introduce statistical software packages.

Students are welcome to contact the course coordinator if they have questions concerning administrative matters. For learning difficulties, students should seek advice from their instructors.

●   Students are assessed throughout the term on their attendance, class participation, assignments, etc.

●   Many assignments require students to use statistical software and submit the computer printout to their instructors.

●   The tests (mid-term and final exams) will have questions related to the statistical software.

Warnings

Classroom disciplines: General rules should be observed. It is unacceptable to use mobile phones or pagers during classes. Students are expected to attend every class. Punctuality is also very important.

Tests and Exams: Information on the test and the examination will be posted on the course website several weeks in advance of the events. Students should attend the test and the examination. No reassessment test or exam will be given to absentees for trivial excuses.
