Additional instructions: Follow the instructions below. Your Research Proposal and Annotated Bibliography should be no longer than 5000 words. Your essay must be referenced using footnotes and must comply with the OSCOLA referencing system. Footnotes count towards the word limit. Plagiarism rules apply as normal. Your summative Research Proposal and Annotated Bibliography is due to be submitted via Canvas on Monday 6th January 2025 at 12:00 (midday). |
This is a 5000-word assessment by way of:
• Research Proposal (suggested word count 4,250 words)
• Annotated Bibliography (suggested word count 750 words)
• Full Bibliography not included in the word count
You may choose any legal topic for your research proposal, but it must be a different title to the one used for your formative assessment. We suggest that you choose one linked to your interests, for example, something that you have been studying in semester 1 or a topic you wish to develop in your LLM dissertation.
Your research proposal must be properly referenced throughout using footnotes in the OSCOLA style. Footnotes count towards the word count.
Your research proposal should contain the following elements:
1. A proposed research topic written as a question (rather than a statement);
2. A section on the introduction, background and context of your question (approximately 500-750 words);
3. A brief review of the academic literature, organised by theme (approximately 2,000 words);
4. An explanation of how you would approach answering your proposed question, the methods you would use and why, as well as any limitations or ethical considerations you foresee in this approach (approximately 1,500 words).
5. An annotated bibliography for the three most important academic sources you have referred to in your literature review, properly cited using OSCOLA. Your annotations for each source should be reflective, outlining the source’s key arguments, the source’s strengths and weaknesses and how the source assisted you in developing your evaluation in the literature review and identifying the research gap. The annotation should be distinct from your thematic literature review (approximately 750 words).
6. A full bibliography of all the sources you have made use of in your assessment (unannotated, not included in the word count but must be full, complete and in OSCOLA format).
