The pulse rates of a random sample of individuals were measured both before and after exercise. Information including sex, smoking status, height, and weight were also recorded for each participant.
(a) Describe the shape of the distribution of pulse rates before and after exercise by calculating the appropriate numerical measures in Excel. (4 marks)
(b) Let the weight be the independent variable, and the pulse rates before exercise be the dependent variable, create a summary output using Excel. Based on this output,
(i) study the association between weight and pulse rates before exercise. (4 marks)
(ii) conduct the appropriate one-sided test to determine whether the data provide sufficient evidence of a correlation between weight and pulse rates before exercise. (4 marks)
(c) Discuss whether it is appropriate to conduct a correlation analysis between the smoking status and the pulse rates before exercise. (2 marks)
(d) Identify the minimum, the first quartile (Qi), the median (Qz), the third quartile (Qs) and the maximum of the pulse rates after exercise for smokers and non-smokers, respectively. Use the function QUARTILE.EXC in Excel to find Qi. Qz and Qs. (5 marks)
(e) Compute the lower and upper outlier limits for the pulse rates after exercise for smokers and non-smokers, respectively. Hence, determine whether there are any outliers. (4.5 marks)
(f) Based on the results from parts (d) and (e), create box and whisker plots in Excel to display the pulse rates after exercise for smokers and non-smokers. Subsequently, conduct a detailed analysis comparing the two box and whisker plots. (8 marks)
