Unit 4 - Final Project - Album Cover Redesign

You will be remaking and redesigning a pre-existing album cover

The final project is DUE Thursday June 26 - there are NO EXCEPTIONS, final marks are being completed the next day.

Specifications:

The final album cover should be designed for print as a square, 8.5 x 8.5  inches at 300ppi, CMYK colour.

It needs to include: the title of the album, the name of the musician/band

If you’re using photographic imagery, it must be heavily altered by you. Multiple photos must be used and elements cut out and added to other photos. Consider drawing on top of or adding design elements to any photographs used.

Instructions:

1. Choose an album cover to redesign. The album can be in any language but the redesign needs to be for an English-speaking audience. Complete the ‘Album Cover Redesign - Analysis’ step on Schoology and submit there. You are analyzing what and how the original album cover is communicating about the genre of music, the musician/band and the mood/tone/theme of the album.

2. Create a mind map for your album cover on PAPER. This is where you will be developing the idea to use for your album cover. Complete the ‘Album Cover Redesign - Mindmap’ step on Schoology and submit there. Think about having to show someone what the musician/band, style of music and tone/mood/theme of the album is without being able to play them the music. How would you communicate these ideas visually?

3. Create a moodboard for your album cover. This is where you will be developing how the album cover will look. Complete the ‘Album Cover Redesign - Moodboard’ step on Schoology and submit there. Remember that a moodboard is a collection of inspiration for how your album cover will look, follow the instructions closely for what should and shouldn’t be included.

4. Create quick, small thumbnail drawings to work out the general layout of your album cover. Complete the ‘Album Cover Redesign - Thumbnails” step on Schoology and submit there. Remember these shouldn’t be detailed, they’re just to determine the general layout and composition.

5. Present your mindmap/moodboard/thumbnails to the teacher for approval on your direction. You must be able to explain your idea for the album cover based on your mindmap and the look and style of your album cover based on your moodboard and thumbnails. Sign-up for the presentation and feedback will be first-come first-served in class.

6. After your direction has been approved, you can proceed to developing rough versions of your album cover. These are detailed drawings where you work out the layout, arrangement and size of all of the elements that will be on your cover - the album title, the name of the musician/band and the album art. Complete the ‘Album Cover Redesign - Roughs” step on Schoology and submit there.

7. Present your roughs to the teacher for approval on your final direction. Your roughs must be detailed enough that all of the elements are clearly visible. If you want feedback on your colour choices, prepare colour roughs to show. Sign-up for the presentation and feedback will be first-come first-served in class.

8. Once you have approval on your rough version you can now proceed to designing your final album cover, making sure to apply the feedback you’ve received. Use your time in-class wisely   and you can present your work to the teacher at any time to get additional feedback as you work on your final. Complete the ‘Album Cover Redesign - FINAL’ step on Schoology and submit there.

9. Write a short paragraph (150 words) in defence of your album cover redesign. This is where you explain the design choices you made and why you made them. Complete the ‘Album Cover Redesign - Defence’ step on Schoology and submit there.
