ASSESSMENT 3 PROJECT BRIEF
DESIGNING A SPACE FOR VIEWING, MEET ING + CLEANSING
Weighting 50%
Due Date 4th May, 10pm Digital Upload to Moodle + 5th May, 11am Presentations
ASSESSMENT DESCRIPTION
In Assessment 3 students will be developing a detailed design of a fishing club, surf life saving tower and cleansing facilities based on their site analysis and spatial studies.
The detailed design phase of a project follows on from the site analysis and initial circulation studies. In this assessment students will be asked to consider how they would site, compose and construct a building to house the Gordons Bay Fishing Club, the new Gordon’s Bay Surf Life Saving Tower and bathing facilities. A detailed breakdown of the requirements for each space can be found below.
PROJ ECT B RI E F
Gordon’s Bay is the only non-patrolled beach along the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk, you have been commissioned to design an observation tower by Surf Life Saving Australia and Randwick Council that will be combined with the existing Gordon’s Bay Amateur Fishing Club. As the bay is predominantly calm, a large surf life saving (SLS) club is not required, instead you are asked to design a lookout tower large enough for 3 lifesavers, along with appropriate amenities and storage. The tower must be elevated to give the lifesavers uninterrupted views across the bay.
In addition to the SLS facilities, Randwick Council wants you to design amenities with a focus on cleansing, at the moment Gordons Bay does not have any shower or toilet facilities. Given the impressive natural beauty of the area the council wants a bespoke design response that focuses on the experience of cleansing as opposed to a standard amenities block. The public facilities should pay particular attention to the experience of the users, the design should draw inspiration from the site to create a space that considers the functional and atmospheric qualities of the space. You are also encouraged to consider whether the existing infrastructure (boat skiff, walkways) needs to be altered.
The commission also asks you to redesign the Gordon’s Bay Amateur Fishing Club and to add additional amenity and function. The fishing club will be frequently used by its members who can access the club at anytime via a secure entry. The club serves a functional and community role which should be captured in your architectural solution.

Surf Life Saving Tower |
20m2* |
An area for up to 3 life savers, the pavilion should be sited to ensure the life savers have uninterrupted views across the Bay. The design of the viewing area should consider the life savers comfort, views and access. The tower will need a stair for lifesavers to enter and exit the structure. Storage must be provided for life saving equipment that can be easily transported onto the beach. |
|
Fishing Club |
30m2* |
The fishing club must provide 10m2 of storage for fishing equipment ranging from rods to spare materials for repairing boats. The club also requires 2 large freezers for storing bait and fish. You will need to provide 2 work benches for the fisherman to prepare equipment and for making any necessary repairs. In addition to being a utilitarian space, the club also serves a social role by allowing members to get together and catch up. You need to provide at least 20m2 of meeting spaces including places for seating and eating. |
|
Bathing Facilities |
25m2* |
At present there are no bathing facilities at Gordon’s Bay you must propose the location and types of facilities that you believe would work best for bathing at Gordons Bay. Council does not want a typical amenities block and has instead asked you to consider alternatives to how people could bathe at Gordons Bay. |
* Areas are approximate and students should propose the dimensions of their spaces based on rigorous testing.
D E LI VER AB L E S
All deliverables will be submitted on A3 (or larger) panels. ORTHOGRAPHIC DRAWINGS
|
Students will prepare a set of orthographic drawings of their proposal. Suggested drawings: |
|
|
1 x Site Plan 1 x Floor Plan at each level 1 x Short Section that showcases all areas 1 x Long Section showcasing relationship between site and proposal |
(1:200) (1:50) or (1:100) (1:50) or (1:100) (1:200) |
|
Ensure the orthographic drawings include appropriate conventions. The drawings can either be hand drawn, digital or a combination of the two. Note these are the minimum requirements, students are welcome to include any additional drawings that they deem necessary. 3D REPRESENTATION OF THE PROPOSAL |
|
|
Students will create 3D images of their proposal, these can be exterior or interior images. Atleast 1 x 3D Representations of the Proposal The 3D Representation can either be hand drawn, digital or a combination of the two. The 3D representation should include the site context. Note these are the minimum requirements, students are welcome to produce more than 2 images. PHYSICAL MODEL |
|
A refined physical model of the proposal that fits onto the group site model produced in Assessment 2 (1:50).
Students are welcome to submit more than 1 model or a series of process models to accompany the refined model.
