Assessment Grading:
• The Speaking for Project assessment contributes 30% to the overall EAP102TC module grade.
• The Task mark is made up of 50% in Part One and 50% in Part Two. The language features (Fluency & Cohesion, Vocabulary, Grammar and Pronunciation) will be assessed holistically across Part One and Part Two and a single mark will be given for each language feature.
• You will lose marks in the Task column if you fail to meet any of the CTRs (stated page 2). Advice for Part One:
(1) Attend and actively participate in all regular EAP102TC seminars to make the most of opportunities to practice speaking and presentation skills and receive feedback from your lecturer and peers. Your EAP102TC lecturer will inform you of various practice opportunities.
(2) You will not be allowed to read a script or notes. Rehearse your presentation several times before the assessment event. The use of a visual aid is not compulsory, but it is recommended thatyou consider utilising one because it will support your presentation and your delivery of it.
(3) Aim to speak for between three and four minutes. The lecturer will stop you when four minutes is up (regardless of whether you covered all your content).
(4) Plan your time carefully to ensure that you have sufficient time to cover all three sections of the presentation outlined in the task.
(5) Try to make your presentation understandable to a non-specialist audience, for example, by explaining some technical terms or definitions if necessary.
Advice for Part Two:
(6) When you respond to the questions after your presentation, try to give extended answers – provide examples, explanations, justifications, analysis and evaluation. Remember that the lecturer is assessing the language you produce. They will stop you ifyou are speaking for too long.
General advice
(7) Look out for emails containing information about the speaking task and check e- Bridge for details of the day, time and venue of your speaking assessment (available at least 24 hours before it takes place).
(8) Do not be late for your speaking assessment as you will not be allowed in the exam room and receive a mark of zero. Your speaking assessment cannot be rescheduled.
(9) Show your student ID card to the examiner. Other forms of physical ID can also be accepted, namely, national ID, passport or driving license. Failure to present a valid form of ID may result in you not being able to enter the exam room.
(10) If you miss your speaking assessment because of unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances, you may be able to apply for mitigating circumstances. Please refer to the Module Handbook, Section C (available on LMC) or e-Bridge for further details.
(11) You will not be assessed by your regular EAP102TC module lecturer and your speaking assessment (both parts) will be recorded on audio equipment.
