F21 QMS 210 SPSS Project
Project Description: Your SPSS project is about hospital data that consists of the following variables:
X1 = Hospital ID (each hospital surveyed has an ID number)
X2 = Region (where 1=Toronto, 2=Markham, 3=Richmond Hill, 4=Mississauga,
5=Ajax, 6=Aurora)
X3 = Number of beds
X4 = Number of admissions
X5 = Number of outpatient Visits
X6 = Number of births delivered
X7 = Total expenses for a hospital stay (in $1000)
X8 = Total salary paid (in $1000)
X9 = Number of hospital’s personnel
You will be assigned some of these variables and the data that you will analyze and answer the questions. Everybody will have their own data set and a subset of variables.
The SPSS project has 6 parts:
• Part 0 – Download your data set.
• Part 1 – Descriptive Statistics (total 4 marks)
• Part 2 – Normality (total 3 marks)
• Part 3 – Homogeneity of Variances (total 3 marks)
• Part 4 – ANOVA (total 5 marks)
• Part 5 – Upload your SPSS reports (total 2 marks)
1. ACCESING YOUR DATA SET
On D2L, under Assessment -> Quizzes, you will click on SPSS Project link to begin your project. In Part 0 you will be provided a link to download your data . Your data set will be an Excel file. Save this data set on your desktop, preferably in a folder where you will keep track of your SPSS project files/reports. You must not make any changes in the Excel file!
Get familiar with the variables and data that you were assigned and read the questions that you must answer to give you sense of what is expected of you. You can Log Out now if you wish and Log In later when you are ready to revisit or submit the project.
2. PERFORM SPSS DATA ANALYSIS
You need to run two SPSS analyses.
• Descriptive Statistics – Calculating various descriptive statistics and testing for Normality.
• ANOVA Statistics – Homogeneity of Variance Test and One-Way ANOVA You will save the SPSS outputs for these two analyses and eventually upload them in Part 5 of your SPSS project
For variable Region, in the SPSS Variable View use Values option to indicate 1=Toronto, 2=Markham, etc. Your final reports must display the name of the region, i.e., Toronto, not number 1!
In Part 2 of the SPSS project, you will use Test of Normality part of the SPSS report to check normality of variable
X5 = Number of Outpatient Visits
For selected regions using Shapiro-Wilk Test.
The null hypothesis for Shapiro-Wilk test is that
H0: A variable is normally distributed in some population
i.e., the variable’s values are a simple random sample from a normal distribution
We use the following decision rule:
Reject H0 if p < 0.05
So, if p < 0.05 we conclude that our variable is not normally distributed.
In the SPSS report the Shapiro-Wilk
• p-value is represented as Sig.
• test statistic is represented as Statistic
You will have these (p-value, Statistic) for each region you are assigned in your project.
3. ANSWER PROJECT QUESTIONS ON D2L USING YOUR SPSS OUTPUTS
For each question you will be instructed on how to input your answer. Read the instructions carefully.
4. SUBMIT YOUR PROJECT
When you answer all the questions, and you upload your Descriptive Statistics and ANOVA Statistics in Part 5 you will click on SUBMIT QUIZ. You can do this only once so please make sure that you do not click SUBMIT QUIZ unless you are 100% sure that you finished everything.
I have recorded a video on how to complete this project and posted it on D2L. Please watch this video to guide you step-by-step through the whole project.
