HIST 11 ( 1389)
Modern-Day to Early U.S. Comparison Extra Credit
This extra credit assignment will be a comparison between a modern-day topic ofyour choosing and our Early U.S. themes. My goal for this assignment is to pick something that has been popular in recent news, and have an analysis drawn upon it.
In a 2-3 page double-spaced essay format with usual Times New Roman, 12-point font, please write a comparative analysis between a modern topic in U.S. society, government structure, breach of freedom of rights/expression, etc and connect it to our chapter readings.
You are free to choose your own modern topic to compare to our class materials. To help you brainstorm, here are a number of topics you can write about but are not limited to:
● Now that Elon Musk has purchased Twitter (X) and promised to make it more equal in terms of limiting censorship to political affiliation, would this be a good move for American society in general? Or would you argue that unblocking certain people such as: Andrew Tate, Donald Trump, Alex Jones, etc. would cause more harm than good?
● Is our current government system working, or should be there be a major reform? Think
Articles of Confederation not working and the government making significant changes to better the new system of government. Perhaps in today's government such changes could include: no more lobbying, term limits of Congress members, age limits for government public servants, determining whether there should be changes to the popular vote vs. electoral college, etc.
● Has the Democratic Party lost its way from previous generations, and has now been in the business of censorship? IE RFK censorship hearing, no secret service assigned to him, working with Twitter for information suppression, etc.
● Is the U.S. currently in the midst of a major internal disagreement? Think of Early U.S.
themes of major discontent growing over time that ultimately led to the Civil War. In comparing to today, is the political divide becoming too large within American society? Has common sense discussion been eroded in favor ofpopulist agendas?
● And more...
