•    Please proofread your assignment for spelling and grammatical errors.

Referencing and Citing

The questions require you to do basic analysis of the case. You must base your answers and terminology on the material covered in our weeks of information systems theory.

If you wish to report another author’s point of view you should do so in your own words, and properly reference in accordance with an approved referencing style. Direct quotations should be used sparingly, form a small part of your work, and must be placed in quotation marks and referenced.

Question 1 requires you to give a real-world example. Examples can come from journals, newspapers, organisation websites, magazines etc. The real-world examples must be referenced using in-text refencing and included in the reference list at the end of the assignment. For example, Nike uses a product differentiation information system strategy because it allows customers to use its online platform to customise its sneakers. This means that Nike can use information systems to offer adifferent value proposition than its competitors (Smith & Chang, 2010)” .

For more information on referencing styles, visit the library or see:

https://web.library.uq.edu.au/research-tools-techniques/referencing/referencing-style-guides. Use the APA (7th edition)  style. You may use other styles but be consistent throughout and ensure the reader and find the source you cite.

UQ value academic integrity, referencing others work is a key part of this. Please see this link for more information on academic integrity:https://my.uq.edu.au/information-and-services/manage- my-program/student-integrity-and-conduct/academic-integrity-and-student-conduct.

Case: GreenMe: Pioneering Sustainable Energy Solutions

GreenMe Innovations is a family-operated enterprise that specializes in developing and

installing custom sustainable energy solutions for residential and commercial clients.

Unlike major energy companies, GreenMe's approach is highly personalized, offering

consultations and installations tailored to each customer’s specific needs. Clients typically engage with GreenMe through in-person consultations at their office in Brisbane or on-

site evaluations at the client’s location.

A challenge for GreenMe arose during the economic slowdown caused by the COVID- 19    pandemic in 2020-2021. As a business heavily reliant on on-site assessments and face-to-  face interactions, GreenMe experienced a downturn in client engagements. Concurrently,

there was an increasing public interest in sustainable living and energy efficiency, a market trend that GreenMe was unable to fully capitalize on due to its traditional    business model.

After conducting an analysis using Porter’s Five Forces, GreenMe recognized the

competitive pressure from emerging online renewable energy service providers and

larger, more established companies. This prompted the company to reconsider its growth and modernization strategies. While GreenMe has always served a niche market of

environmentally conscious clients, the growing awareness and demand for green energy   solutions present a significant opportunity for expansion. At the sametime, the GreenMe is hearing lots of hype around technology such as AI, blockchain, big data analytics and

ERP and is wondering whether it should just invest in these technologies.

One of GreenMe’s primary challenges is its digital infrastructure, which has remained

basic and outdated. GreenMe recognises that it is not ‘digitally ready.’  The company has relied on rudimentary tools for scheduling, client communication, and project

management, such as Excel. This limited digital adoption has hindered GreenMe’s

operational efficiency and ability to scale its services. The lack of an integrated Customer Relationship Management system means client interactions and historical data are not    recorded, leading to gaps in customer relationship management and business intelligence. Similarly, supply chain interactions and inventory management for   equipment and materials are handled manually, slowing down project timelines.

The owners of GreenMe are now considering how to evolve the business to meet current market demands and are planning to reduce their involvement in day-to-day operations.  They recognise the need for more sophisticated and automated processes.

GreenMe has recruited you as a business analyst. Your role is to advise on the adoption and implementation of advanced information systems. The owners would like advice on different information systems strategies that can help the firm modernise itself and make the most of the demand for its products. In particular, they want to streamline current operations but also enable GreenMe to leverage emerging market opportunities in the sustainable energy sector. They also want to better understand if they should choose a technology or define a strategy first.

Your task:

Question 1: Select one of the below information systems strategies and explain how it can help GreenMe be more competitive.

(i)           Basic strategy/align IT with business objectives;

(ii)          Low-cost leadership;

(iii)         Product differentiation;

(iv)         Focus on market niche;

(v)          Strengthen customer or supplier intimacy.

Provide a real-world example1 for the information systems strategy you identified and show how it is applicable to the case of GreenMe.

Use at least two academic references in your answer.

(600 words total) (15 marks).

Question 2: Explain which should management prioritize: selecting a specific technology or defining their strategy?

You do not need to use references in this answer.

(200 words total) (5 marks).

Marking Rubric

This assignment is worth 20 marks. The marking rubric on the next page is designed to reflect a marking schema of 100 percent that is scaled back to 20 marks. Part marks are rounded up or down to the nearest half mark.
