Business Administration

Syllabus for BSAD 265 - Inferential Statistics and Problem Solving

Correspondence

2021-2022

Course Description:

This course is designed to transform you into an investigator in the fine art of drawing conclusions from data using standard descriptive and inferential statistics methods. Throughout this course, you will gain an understanding of the underlying theory behind topics such as types of data, various data sources, data organization, measures of central tendency and variation, probability and probability distributions. You will also learn concepts of hypothesis testing and how to analyze the following situations: binomial, multinomial and contingency tables. The ability to analyze data is essential in all business disciplines from operations management to sales. It is necessary that a strong statistical foundation be established.

Prerequisites:

MATH 121

Course Objectives/Instructional Methods:

The following learning objectives are the desired outcome for this course and will be

evaluated at the completion of this class. After completing this class you should be able:

1.    To differentiate types of data and organize data into the appropriate charts, graphs and tables

2.    To calculate and interpret measures of central tendency and dispersion

3.    To understand probability concepts and their usage in statistics

4.    To understand and apply the basics of sampling techniques

5.    To use statistical inference, that is hypothesis testing, and

6.    To perform standard advanced statistical methods.

Credit hours and expected student effort:

3 Credit Hours

Over 15 weeks, the student will “meet” with the instructor for 7.5 hours (375 minutes) and will be expected to spend an average of 7 hours (350 minutes) per week or 105 hours (6,300 minutes) per semester researching and producing a substantial paper or project, or engaging in an internship and writing a paper about their experience.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs):

The student learning objectives are to help students enhance their quantitative problem solving skills. Students will be familiar with the 5 step processes for solving quantitative problems, which can be described as following:

1. Define the problem (read; restate in your own words; what type of problem is this? What do you need to solve for?)

2. Identify known and unknowns (write down things you know; then write down what you do not know; what are you solving for? What information do you need? What formulas do you have available?)

3. Translate to mathematical language (write down numbers and associate with variables; write down formulas you can use; draw a visual representation if appropriate)

4. Solve the problem (use equations and numbers from earlier parts;  careful on using the correct units for the numbers)

5. Check your answer (is it in the order of magnitude for the problem? Does it make sense?)

Required Text(s) and Other Materials:

Business Statistics for Contemporary Decision Making 8th Edition, Ken Black, Wiley, ISBN13: 978- 1- 118-49476-9.

Course Requirements:

Suggested Reading and Viewing.

Please see the course schedule on the last page.

Homework:

1.    There are 9 homework and the total available homework score is 100 points.

2.    All assignments should be your original work and should not be ones that are already done in a previous/other class. You will get zero if this happens.

Exams:

There are two exams for this course. None are cumulative; each covers material from a select set of chapters from the text, as noted in the course schedule on the last page.

Each exam will be the same style as the assignments.

You may use a calculator, and necessary formulas will be provided in a separate paper. Exam is closed book and closed notes.

When you are ready to take an exam, please contact the Office of Extended Studies at 1-800-388-6154 to schedule your exam.

In addition to the grading information, Blackboard contains a number of files of PowerPoint slides and other course materials.

We cannot send grades or grading comments via email. The fastest and most effective method is the Blackboard account.

Proctor Required:

Proctored exams serve an important role in maintaining the academic integrity of our courses in the Independent Study Program. Approved proctors are responsible for confirming the identity, administering, and supervising the student while taking exams to ensure that all guidelines and instructions are followed.

Students are encouraged to identify an acceptable proctor within the first two weeks of a course to allow for approval and scheduling. Questions regarding proctored exams and the appropriateness of a proctor should be directed to the Extended Studies Staff at 719.549.2162.

Below are the options for getting exams proctored:

.   On Campus In-Person Proctoring in the Testing Center On Campus In-Person

o All Testing is by appointment only please contact the Testing Center at [email protected]

Testing Center is located LARC Suite 251

*The Testing Center is an approved Proctor the Proctor Request Form is not required.*

.   Off Campus In-Person (Fill out Proctor Exam Request Form)

https://csupueblo1.formstack.com/forms/exam_request_form

o In-person proctors must be approved by the Extended Studies Staff before exams will be sent.

o Proctor must have NO conflict of interest (e.g. familial relationship or

friendship whereby he/she benefits from the successful outcome of exam scores)

o Students are responsible for identifying an acceptable proctor and filling out the Proctor Exam Request Form.

o Please allow 3 to 5 business days for staff to process proctored exams request. All exam requests received before the drop deadline will be   processed after the drop deadline.

o Once processed, all exams will be sent to the approved proctor in one packet with instructions.

o Only one Proctored Exam Request Form is required for each course
