AIM

Your aim is to provide a literature overview of properties of different types of optical fibres that are currently used and also perspective optical fibres that are currently under development. Describe different types of optical fibres and their role in optical communication. Emphasis on losses, dispersion and cost/ease of production. Max 6 pages (3000 words) excluding title page and references.

In your max 3000 words report you will need to:

1. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the light propagation in optical fibres.

2. Demonstrate a basic understanding of different types of optical fibres.

3. Identify key phenomena affecting light propagation in optical fibres and constrains they put on optical communication.

4. Identify novel fibres that could help to overcome current limitations of silica fibres.

5. Describe and discuss your findings in terms of pros and cons of different types of optical fibres in optical communications.
