ASSIGNMENT 1 – TYPOGRAPHY, 5%

This assignment tests your knowledge and skills with typography. Typography is a fundamental principle of design and you will use these skills throughout this course and in any future design work you do.

Create a new Powerpoint Presentation (ppt) for this assignment. Put your name, your student ID number and “Typography Assignment” on the first slide.

TASK ONE: RESEARCH

PART A

Research the meaning of TYPOGRAPHY online. What is it and why is it important?

1.    Write a definition for typography in your own words (do not copy+paste from the internet).

2.    Write about why typography is important.

PART B

Study the following typography terms online:

•    Font

•    Serif

Sans serif

•    Leading

•    Tracking

•    Kerning

•    Lorem Ipsum

1.    Create a new slide for each of the typography terms above. Write a definition for each term, in your own words.

2.    In Adobe Illustrator, practice using each of these typography methods. Take a screenshot of your example for each typography term and add this to your ppt, next to your written definition.

TASK TWO: RESEARCHING HISTORY OF POPULAR TYPEFACE’S

Choose 2 typefaces from the options below to find more information about their history:

PART TWO:

Using the questions below research some key information about your 2 chosen typefaces and place the information in your ppt presentation.

What to Research:

When was the typeface made? Were there any significant things happening in society at that time? Who created the typeface and how did they create it? Was it made by hand, carvings, digitally?

What country was this typeface made in? What are some facts about the Designer of the typeface? What are some key characteristics of the typeface? E.g. inspired by calligraphy

What are some famous/existing design examples of this typeface?

TASK THREE: CREATING ART WITH LETTERS

Type (letters and words) can be used to create visual images too. Practice your skills of creating and manipulating type using Adobe Illustrator. Create two artworks using the 2 typefaces you have researched

1.    Think of two objects that relates to you (e.g. a handbag or a camera).

2.    Use the pen tool in Adobe Illustrator to draw a basic outline for the objects you have chosen.

3.    Use the type toolandfill your object with your chosen typefaces, then modify the font, colour, size etc. You can fill your objects with words that relate to you like your favourite colour, food, your name etc.

TASK FOUR: CLASS PRESENTATION OF WORK

Each student will be required to discuss their ppt presentation with the class. You will be showing your research about your 2 chosen typefaces and discuss your two artworks.

What you will be marked on:

•    Your general research about typography and your chosen typeface’s history

•    Your image created with typography – using Adobe Illustrator

•    Task Three:

•    Your ppt presentation

•    Your class presentation of your work

•    ALL Research must be written by student and cited

It is important that you present your work clearly on your ppt, you will receive marks for visual appeal and presentation.
