L1022: Writing Guide and Marking Scheme for the Project 2023-2024

Please read this document carefully – it explains how you should write up your project report and how many points you can score for different sections. You should use this document in combination with the project document.

The project document contains instructions on the analysis you should perform on the data. You have received your data set via email. The data sets are different across students and you need to use the one you were sent. Once you have opened your data in Excel, perform the analysis as stated in each question in your project document.

The suggested general format for writing up the project and marks available for each section is as follows:

A. Give your project a title and begin with a short introduction summarising your project. Define your variables and identify the questions you will address using the provided data. You can use sources here to give background information on the topic. [10%]

B. Descriptive statistics (question 1): calculate descriptive statistics and summarise the key features of the data using suitable graphs. Provide a written interpretation. [10%]

C. Correlations (question 2): find the correlation coefficients, test their statistical significance, and comment on the results.  [10%]

D. Test for differences across country size (question 3): make sure you clearly write out all steps of the test and interpret your results. [10%]

E. Correlations for question 5: find the correlation coefficients and comment on them. [5%]

F. Simple linear regression (question 6): show your regression output and discuss. [10%]

G. Prediction (question 7): Show your workings and interpret your result. [5%]

H. Simple linear regression (question 9): show your regression output and discuss. Explain whether this is better than the regression in question 6. [10%]

I. Multiple linear regression (question 10): show the new regression output and discuss. Which regression model do you think is better? [10%]

J. R-squared (question 11): Interpret the R-squared and make sure you clearly write out all steps of the test and interpret your results. [10%]

K. Change in coefficients (question 12): Explain why the coefficient of R&D changes when we include GDP p.c. and the share of the rural population in the regression. [5%]

L. Conclusions. What are the overall findings of the project? [5%]

Remember that top marks will only be awarded to clearly presented, accurate and well written answers. For example: tables presented without supporting explanation will not score high marks.
