CM5102 Chemistry in Society

Focus Topic Writing

One of the learning objectives of CM5102 is for students to review the key role of chemistry in promoting the well-being and sustainability of today’s advanced society. After going through the lectures/discussions on the fundamental challenges and potential solutions, you will come to realise the tremendous chemistry R&D efforts around the world that drive this endeavour.

In this CA component, you are required to review critically 3-5 published articles on the R&D efforts of a chosen focus topic and submit a piece of 10-page writing of your review and opinion. Your essay will be graded according to rubrics given overleaf.

You are encouraged to begin working on this essay early, in the following steps:

1)   Select a topic  under one of the broad areas of (i) Applications of analytical chemistry, (ii) Energy, (iii) Food safety & security, or (iv) Health & well-being. Decide on a specific focus topic you wish to study  its  R&D  efforts and search for  relevant  (and credible)  published articles (can be journal papers, opinion pieces, magazines, reports, etc) . Your review must include some content related to chemistry as this is a chemistry module.

2)   Organise your writing systematically in appropriately named sections, always begin with a succinct Introduction and end with critical Conclusions.

3)   Submit the final essay (approximately 10 pages of font 12 and 1.5 line spacing, inclusive of everything such as citations/figures/tables/illustrations/charts/etc) to Canvas “Topic Review Submission” under “Assignments” by the end of Week 12.

4) IMPORTANT: please note that NUS places high importance on the integrity of our students’ work and takes plagiarism seriously.

Your final writing will  be subjected to  plagiarism  check  automatically  in the submission folder  (hence  please  do  not  attempt  to  submit   twice)  and  points  will  be  deducted proportionally according to the %Similarity reported by the plagiarism check:
