ASSIGNMENT 1 CASE STUDY – RAGLAN FOODS

It was 2014 and Tesh had a problem. Her partner Seb was allergic to dairy, but they both wanted yoghurt as part of their diet. However, all the products available in New Zealand were dairy-based. So Tesh set about developing a recipe for yoghurt based on coconut milk.

It turns out it was a bit of a success. They started selling a few bottles (jars from the recycling centre and labels cello-taped on) to friends and neighbours. It quickly grew into Raglan Foods, a nationwide business with sixteen different yoghurts, drinks, and condiments, all coconut-based. In the first four years they grew from Seb and Tess making a few jars in their garage to over 70,000 jars a month, about 22 staff, and selling in 600 stores in New Zealand with stockists in Hong Kong, Singapore, and China. They are passionate about moving to a plant-based diet and today process over 2000 tons of coconut milk each    year harvested from over 42,000 coconut trees. Along the way they had to learn a great deal about running a food business. There were regulations, consents, testing, sourcing, production, food chemistry, marketing, distribution, and finance. Awards started coming as fast as customers taking the Gourmet and People’s Choice at the 2015 NZ Food Awards.

Ultimatly they achieved B Corp certification and in 2022 were recognized as one of the ‘Best for the World’ companies. Not bad for a couple of surfers from Raglan! There are a few links below, and quite a bit on the Raglan Food home page. Use this information and any other relevant sources you can find to help answer the questions.
