Case Study 1 Maximum Word Count 1000 words
A market research company has carried out a telephone survey to determine the views of customers on the service provided by their gas supplier.
The views of the 420 customers who were surveyed last June are recorded in the table below.

(i) Carry out an appropriate hypothesis test to determine whether the gas supplier and service rating are independent. (12 marks)
(ii) Write a report on your findings to present to the Managing Director of the market
research company . (13 marks) (Total 25 marks)
Case Study 2 Maximum Word Count 1000 words
A large restaurant chain launched a “Campaign for Cleanliness” in all of its locations as part of an improved hygiene programme. At each restaurant the manager has been asked to keep a record of the cost and quantities of certain cleaning products purchased during the year.
Data have been collated for one location for the last three years. The data for three of the cleaning products are summarised in the table below. These products are supplied in individual, standard size bottles.

(i) Calculate, using Year 1 as the base year:
(a) Simple aggregate price indices for Year 2 and Year 3. (4 marks)
(b) Laspeyres price indices for Year 2 and Year 3. (4 marks)
(c) Paasche price indices for Year 2 and Year 3 (assuming that Year 3 is the current year). (4 marks)
(ii) Comment on the relevance of each of these indices for monitoring the cost of the
cleaning products and compare their relative merits . (13 marks) (Total 25 marks)
Case Study 3 Maximum Word Count 1000 words
(i) Discuss the importance of the Normal distribution in management decision-making, giving three relevant examples from a business sector in which you have worked. (12 marks)
(ii) Examination marks obtained in a recent Economics examination were normally
distributed with an average of 54, and a standard deviation of 18. The pass mark was 50.
Calculate:
(a) The percentage of students who obtained at least 70.
(b) The percentage of students who passed the exam.
(c) The revised pass mark if only 15% of the students failed the exam. (9 marks)
(iii) The staff car park at the hospital has 330 spaces and parking is restricted to permit
holders. Data collected earlier indicate that only 85% of the permit holders will be at the hospital on a given day. As a result, the hospital has decided to issue 380 permits.
Calculate the probability that, on a given day, at least one of the permit holders will not obtain a parking space in this car park. (4 marks) (Total 25 marks)
Case Study 4 Maximum Word Count 1000 words
A researcher has carried out some research on small businesses in Malaysia. The aim of the research was to identify the relationship between the proportion of output that is exported and factors such as the number of employees, the turnover, the number of years the business has been trading and the possibility of financial assistance.
Information was collected from a total of 70 small businesses. The variables used were:
Export |
The proportion of output that is exported |
Staff |
Number of employees (full-time equivalents) |
Turnover |
Turnover (£100 000’s) for the last financial year |
Year |
Number of years the business has been trading |
Assist |
Availability of financial assistance 0 = none available and 1 = possibility |
The researcher decided to analyse the data using a multiple regression package with Export as the dependent variable and Staff, Turnover, Year and Assist as the independent variables. Part of the computer output from the analysis is shown below:

Analyse the computer output of the multiple regression model. Write a report on your findings and discuss the usefulness of this particular model, possible improvements, and
make recommendations for further analyses. (Total 25 marks)
