Course Description

Analytic geometry and vector algebra in three-dimensional Euclidean space; differentiation and in- tegration of vector-valued functions and multivariable functions; partial derivatives, line integrals, surface integrals, double and triple integrals, and applications of multivariable calculus to physics.

Prerequisites

Satisfactory completion of Calculus II (MAT 296) with a grade of C, or better, or equivalent.

Course Objectives

Determine equations of lines, planes, spheres, cylinders, and quadratic surfaces in 3-D space Define 3-D vector functions and compute their higher-order derivatives

Define limits and continuity of functions of 2 and 3 variables

Define and compute partial derivatives, total derivatives, directional derivatives, and extrema of functions of 2 and 3 variables

Compute line integrals of scalar fields and vector fields

Compute double integrals in Cartesian and polar coordinates

Compute triple integrals in Cartesian, cylindrical, and spherical coordinates Use Green’s Theorem to solve line integrals

Compute area, volume, mass, and center of mass using double and triple integrals

Describe parametric surfaces and compute their areas

Define and evaluate surface integrals

State and apply Stokes’ Theorem

State and apply Divergence Theorem

Textbook, Calculators, & WebAssign

Calculator: This course will not require a calculator. The use of a calculator on any exam or quiz is strictly forbidden.

We will be using Essential Calculus: Early Transcendentals (2nd ed.) by James Stewart, together with the accompanying online homework platform called WebAssign.  Your e-textbook and We- bAssign will be provided through Orange Inclusive Access (OIA). You are automatically enrolled in OIA, and the cost of the textbook and WebAssign will be charged to your SU Bursar account. This one-time payment of $97.43 includes access to the textbook and WebAssign for the duration of the entire calculus sequence (MAT 295, MAT 296, and MAT 397).  If you took MAT 296 in Spring 2023, you have already paid the fee and will not be charged again. You will be granted access to the e-textbook and WebAssign on the first day of class.  If you decide to drop MAT 397 before the drop deadline, the charge (if any) for the textbook and WebAssign will be removed from your SU Bursar account.  If you decide to opt out of OIA, please follow the instructions provided by the bookstore, and you will be responsible for obtaining the textbook and access to WebAssign elsewhere.

Class Attendance and Participation

You are expected to attend and participate in lecture. If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to obtain notes for that class from another student and find out about any announcements made during class.   Do not expect the instructor to repeat the class lecture or provide notes. If you are unable to participate for an extended period of time (48 hrs +), you should request an absence of notification from your home school/college Dean’s Office or the Dean of Students Office.

Syracuse University’s Attendance Policy including Verification of Medical Condition:  Attendance in classes is expected in all courses at Syracuse University.  It is a federal requirement that students who do not attend or cease to attend a class to be reported at the time of determination by the faculty that the student never attended or stopped attending the class. Homework & Worksheets

Homework will be assigned through WebAssign.  The homework will be due at the end of each week with extensions on a case by case basis. See textbook information for details.

Weekly worksheets will be assigned and due at the end of the week. These worksheets are to help you study for quizzes and exams.  They will be graded on completion with reasonable attempts made on each problem.

Quizzes

There will be a quiz given each week there is not an exam. The quizzes will be given on Thursdays, with the format to be determined.  No make-up quizzes will be given without a valid excuse! For a missed quiz with a valid excuse (documented by a note from a doctor or the Dean’s Office), the student is responsible for the rescheduling of the missed quiz with the instructor.

Exams

There are two exams and a final exam.

● Exam 1 - June 1st

● Exam 2 - June 15th

● Final - June 29th

You are not permitted to use any outside materials, resources on the exams, unless stated otherwise by the instructor.  Any violation of this policy is a violation of the university’s Academic Integrity Policy.

There will be no make-up exams, even in the case of an emergency. A missed exam counts as a zero unless a valid excuse from a physician or the Dean’s Office is presented to your instructor. With an acceptable written excuse, a missed exam score will be replaced with the percentage earned on the corresponding subsection of the final exam.

The final exam is comprehensive and will be given during the last class of the semester.  Do not make plans the day of the exam. If a student has a conflict with another final exam, the student must contact their instructor at least two weeks in advance in order to have it resolved.

Academic Integrity

Syracuse University’s Academic Integrity Policy reflects the high value that we, as a university com- munity, place on honesty in academic work. The policy holds students accountable for the integrity of all work they submit and for upholding course-specific, as well as university-wide, academic in- tegrity expectations. The policy governs citation and use of sources, the integrity of work submitted in exams and assignments, and truthfulness in all academic matters, including course attendance and participation. The policy also prohibits students from:  1) submitting the same work in more than one class without receiving advance written authorization from both instructors and, 2) us- ing websites that charge fees or require uploading of course materials to obtain exam solutions or assignments completed by others and present the work as their own. Under the policy, instructors who seek to penalize a student for a suspected violation must first report the violation to the Center for Learning and Student Success (CLASS).
