Assessment Brief

Assignment title: Strategic analysis report

Word limit: 4,000 words (+/- 10%)

Learning outcomes assessed: 2,3,4

Overview: What is required?

Using techniques, models and theories covered in this module, construct a strategic analysis for a commercial organisation of your choice.  Within the report of your analytical findings (4000 words in length) you are required to consider the following:

· Analysis of the macro business environment

· Analysis or the impact of competition on the strategic approaches of the organisation.

· Critical analysis of the Organisation’s strategic approach considering both external and internal capabilities

· Evaluation of the strategic tools and techniques, models or theories and their appropriateness in examining strategic options and choices

· Recommendations of possible future strategic directions for the organisation

Structure of the report:

1. Overview of the Report: 200-300 Words

In this section just signpost the reader to the objective of the report. Remember to write in the third person. ‘The purpose of this report is to provide a strategic analysis of factors of……….The report will start with an overview of ……..The report will then proceed……’

2. Analysis of the macro business environment:  800-1000 words

In this section analyse the macro business environment, using appropriate models or techniques, such as PESTLE or STEEPLE analysis.

3. Analysis of the impact of competition on the strategic approaches for the organisation: 800-1000 words

In this section use a range of techniques and models to critically analyse the competitive environment within which the organisation operates and analyse the way in which the organisation competes as a result.  Consider both market conditions and the internal capabilities of the organisation.

· For analysis of the competitive environment and how the business positions itself within it models such as Porter’s 5 Forces, Ansoff’s matrix, Porter’s generic strategy, Bowman’s Strategy Clock and Red/Blue Ocean theory could be used.

· For internal capabilities models such as SWOT analysis, TOWS,  VRIO and Stakeholder analysis could be considered

4. Evaluation of the strategic tools and techniques, models or theories and their appropriateness in examining strategic choices and options: 800-1000 words

In this section evaluate the suitability of the models you have used to conduct your analysis.  This should include an evaluation of the merits and drawbacks of each model and why one model was deemed more suitable than another to perform the analysis.

5. Recommendations of possible future strategic directions for the organisation 500-700 words

Based on your findings what strategic decisions do you recommend the organisation makes? Evaluate the suitability of these recommendation, based on your previous findings in the report

6. Conclusion: 100-200 words

Round off your report with conclusion that summarised the key findings and recommendations of your analysis.
