Assignment 3

Instructions for doing home assignment:

Ø Write down your name and student ID clearly on your assignment (A4-sized paper).

Ø Do NOT use SPSS or Excel unless you are told to do so.

Ø Do NOT directly print out all SPSS outputs.

Ø Please show the steps of computation clearly.

Ø Please submit a hard copy of your assignment in class.

Ø Any late submission of assignment without any justified reason will be penalized.

Question 1

A teacher hypothesized that students who use Facebook while studying tend to have lower grades than non-users. To test his hypothesis, he has classified his students into three groups based on the amount of Facebook use during the time students are studying or doing homework and has recorded the final test scores of the students.  The following table shows the data:

a. With the help of SPSS, use an ANOVA with α = .05 to determine whether there are significant mean differences among the three groups.

b. Comment on the size of the effect by computing η².

c. Conduct a post-hoc analysis using Tukey HSD test to determine which groups are significantly different.

Question 2

a. Sketch a scatter plot for the above data.

b. Without using SPSS, compute the Pearson correlation. Test whether it is significantly different from zero at α = .05.

c. Find the regression equation (Y’ = a + bX) for predicting Y from X.

d. Computed the predicted Y’ score for (i) X = 1 and (ii) X = 5.

e. Plot the regression line on the scatter plot you sketch in (a).
